This week, Reading Borough Council (RBC) will again review the premises licence for the After Dark night club on London Street. At the last review in April, there had been complaints by local residents of loud music beyond licensed hours, alleged breaches of noise abatement notices, and concern from Thames Valley Police (TVP) about drug use and violence on the premises.
Additionally, TVP has objected the After Dark’s application to host the Reading Riot! under-18s live music event on 22 June, saying that the night club suffers “concerning levels of crime and disorder.”
TVP point out that the temporary event application is to extend the hours in which alcohol can be sold at an event advertised for under-18s. The Reading Riot! booking page states:
This event is open to under-18s. Children 5-16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Alcohol will be served in the rear lounge only. The After Dark Club promote responsible drinking. All alcohol sales will be subject to strict ID checks.
We have a host of issues relating to this premises, including… the management of these events, security of the premises, public safety, the prevention of public nuisance and protecting children from harm.
The premises licence holder [Zahid Khan] has failed to adhere to the recommendations from both TVP and RBC. We… do not have confidence in the management… to ensure the safety of both customers and staff.
