Councillor Paul Woodward elected Reading Mayor

The Mayoral Party returns after changing into their robes (L to R) Councillor Deborah Edwards (outgoing mayor), Councillor David Stevens (incoming deputy mayor), Councillor Paul Woodward (incoming mayor) and mace-bearer

Church ward councillor Paul Woodward (Labour) has been elected Reading mayor and Councillor David Stevens (Conservative) elected deputy mayor for the forthcoming year. The elections took place at the Reading Borough Council  annual meeting yesterday evening (22 May).

There was an interval after the election while the mayoral party changed into their costumes. Newly elected mayor Councillor Paul Woodward then received the mace from the outgoing mayor before addressing the annual meeting.

The incoming mayor paid tribute to his predecessor, saying that Councillor Deborah Edwards had been an “exemplary first citizen”.

In her address, the retiring mayor told the meeting that she had had a fantastic year but had noticed changes compared with her previous mayoral year, 2011 to 2012. She mentioned local authority financial cuts and Brexit but said that there was a “growing awareness that bonding together builds resilience.”

The meeting then went on to formally elect the new leader of the council, Councillor Jason Brock, the deputy leader, Councillor Tony Page and other lead councillors.
