The Whitley Pump would like to congratulate the cattle trough and drinking fountain on Spaniards Road in Hampstead, London on making the Historic England list of 23 remarkable places listed in 2018. We hope to make an official twinning visit during 2019.
The Hampstead trough is a Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association example from 1916. The listing description (1459201) describes it as made of granite and of design type ‘1d’.
The Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association is now known as the Drinking Fountains Association.
Reading has at least 4 cattle troughs. The three in west Reading have been documented by the Tilehurst Globe and there is one adjacent to the (now demolished) Central Swimming Pool on Bedford Road (pictured above). None of the Reading troughs are listed.
