Should there be a zebra crossing on Upper Redlands Road?

By Els De Mets.

Most parents are familiar with the challenges of dropping off and picking up their children from school. It is stressful getting there on time and finding somewhere to park or, for those of us who walk or cycle to school, finding a safe place to cross the road amidst the chaos.

The lack of a pedestrian crossing near St Joseph’s College is incredible considering the volume and speed of traffic on Upper Redlands Road. The road is crossed by pupils of St Joseph’s and the nearby Redlands Primary School, as well as students at the university and the general public.

Vehicle drivers need to take responsibility for the safety of pedestrians around them, but the addition of a pedestrian crossing would greatly enhance the safety of people accessing the school on foot, many of whom are unaccompanied children making their way to the bus stop on Shinfield Road or to their homes nearby.

Reading Borough Council’s funding may be limited, but no-one wants to wait for a fatality in order to get this pedestrian crossing to the top of the agenda. If you would like to help convince the council, you can sign the petition.
