The swimming pool at South Reading Leisure Centre on Northumberland Avenue re-opened this February after four months’ closure, during which Reading Borough Council (RBC) refurbished its lighting, air conditioning and water heaters.
Leisure centre manager Steve McBride said that the old air conditioning system had been failing and had caused an uncomfortably damp environment.
“I’m delighted the newly revamped and branded pool is open, said RBC lead councillor for culture and sport Sarah Hacker. “Much of the fabric of the pool at Academy Sport had been in place since it opened in 1983 and needed complete replacement. Swimmers can look forward to a much more pleasant swimming environment and more reliable facilities.”
The South Reading Leisure Centre was built in 1983 and had been known as Academy Sport since 2007, but reverted to its original name in 2017 after returning to RBC management.
