For some of Reading’s more beautiful stinkpipes it is necessary to travel beyond the natural boundaries of the Whitley Pump’s home territory.
There are several routes from the Whitley Pump by which the pictured stinkpipe can be reached. The most strenuous includes a walk up Garnet Hill, which must be one of Reading’s steepest. The effort is rewarded by the stunning views of Katesgrove if you stop to look behind you on the climb.
It is less than ten minutes walk from the top of Garnet Hill to the stinkpipe, one of the plumpest the Whitley Pump has ever seen. The clue is the church in the background of the photograph.
