Reading libraries close for the festive season at 1pm on Saturday 24 December. Before that, there is time to pick up a copy of ‘Reading in the 1970s’ by Ann Smith for someone’s present.

This booklet is the latest in the library’s micro-publishing series. The author worked as a librarian and before her retirement was responsible for the Central Library’s local history collection.

There were major changes in Reading in the 1970s which are described in this booklet. They included the first skyscrapers, the building of the now demolished civic offices and the move of Courage brewery out of the town centre.

Of local interest are some of the illustrations including Huntley, Boorne & Stevens tin plate works on London Street and a 1977 Queen’s Silver Jubilee party at the Christchurch Institute on Milman Road, now part of New Christchurch Primary School.
