At the moment, empty or uninhabitable properties have a 50% reduction in council tax for 12 months, followed by the full charge. RBC proposes that all empty properties, irrespective of habitability, are subject to a full council tax charge.
The council has also proposed to reduce the level of support provided to low income groups (except pensioners, who are not affected) by changing the maximum savings or earnings an applicant can have before getting help, and by altering the level of support if they are eligible.
Consultation on the proposed changes was agreed at the Reading Borough Council Policy Committee on 31 October 2016.
