Tango singer Martin Alvarado gave an impassioned performance at the Rising Sun on Silver Street on Thursday evening, 27 October. This was the final stop on his European and UK tour and was part of the Reading International Festival.
At the Rising Sun he accompanied himself on guitar, and he employed an impressive vocal range and broad emotional compass in his songs. His repertoire included his own compositions, ‘new tango’ works by Astor Piazzola as well as classics by Carlos Gardel.
He told anecdotes between songs, particularly about his experiences of performing in Finland, a country with its own tango style. We also learned that he is a enthusiastic supporter of Buenos Aires football team ‘Banfield‘ and had composed a song about one of their playing stars, Jose Luis Sanchez, nickamed ‘garrafa’. Having got all the football fans in the audience on side after a rendition of ‘Tema de Garrafa’, artist and audience immersed themselves in the tango experience for the rest of the evening.
The seated audience filled the downstairs room at the venue and were warmly appreciative of the artist and the programme.
