Ma Bessie & her Pig Foot band at the Reading Fringe

Julia, Chuck & Matt - South Street Arts Centre, Reading (15.01.2016)

Night three of Reading Fringe Festival and seven events were on offer. The Whitley Pump picked this one just down the road on London Street and barely ten minutes walk away.

Genre: This is the blues!

Members of the band were:
Julia Titus – vocals,
Matt Foster – guitar,
Chuck Lloyd – saxophone,
Rob Gilmour – bass,
Leo Brown – drums.

Venue: Olympia Ballroom, Shehnai, 75-77, London Street, Reading, RG1 4QA.

In the band’s own words:

Mixing Julia’s rich, warm vocal sound with a dynamic band that look as well as sound the part, Ma Bessie & her Pig Foot band mix classic blues and jazz tunes from the inter-war years with a selection of original songs and hand-picked covers from the last 50 years of popular music.

Alongside ‘Gimme A Pig Foot (And a Bottle Of Beer)’, the band performed  pieces that were familiar to many in the hall with gusto and verve.

The audience was also treated to some of Julia Titus’s own compositions from her album Life is too short… .

Julia - Mayors Ball, Reading Concert Hall (12.02.2016)

The Shehnai might appear a suprising location for this event, but it was a cosy and intimate venue. The warm atmopshere created by Ma Bessie and an apppreciative audience were all part of the mix.

If you would like to catch the band, their next gigs are:

Wednesday 10 August:  Artigiano, 81 Broad Street, RG1 2AP
Saturday 13th August:  Here Comes The Sun Festival, Rising Sun Arts Centre, 30 Silver Street, RG1 2ST

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆
