What do our councillors get paid?

Reading Borough Council

Councillors are paid allowances and expenses. The business of the next council meeting on Tuesday 22 March 2016 at 6.30pm includes a proposal to retain most councillors’ allowances at their current level.

According Reading Borough Council (RBC), allowances and expenses are “to cover some of the costs of carrying out their public duties.” There is a scale of basic and special responsibility allowances (SRA).

Annual allowance
Basic allowance £8,220
Leader of the council £7,004
Deputy leader of the council £5,722
SRA tier 1 (note i) £3,816
SRA tier 2 (note ii) £2,147
SRA tier 3 (note iii) £1,074

Councillors are also entitled to a dependent carer’s allowance for up to 15 hours of childcare per week, or for a care attendant for an elderly or disabled relative. It is proposed that this is increased in line with the national living wage from £7.18 to £8.25 an hour.

Travel expenses and subsistence are also paid for meals and overnight stays. Whilst motor vehicle mileage allowances for council officers (that is, RBC members of staff) are paid at 45p per mile, such allowances for elected councillors are only paid at 25p per mile.

Travel by councillor’s own motor vehicle 25p per mile
Travel by councillor’s own bicycle 32p per mile
