Councillors are paid allowances and expenses. The business of the next council meeting on Tuesday 22 March 2016 at 6.30pm includes a proposal to retain most councillors’ allowances at their current level.
According Reading Borough Council (RBC), allowances and expenses are “to cover some of the costs of carrying out their public duties.” There is a scale of basic and special responsibility allowances (SRA).

Councillors are also entitled to a dependent carer’s allowance for up to 15 hours of childcare per week, or for a care attendant for an elderly or disabled relative. It is proposed that this is increased in line with the national living wage from £7.18 to £8.25 an hour.
Travel expenses and subsistence are also paid for meals and overnight stays. Whilst motor vehicle mileage allowances for council officers (that is, RBC members of staff) are paid at 45p per mile, such allowances for elected councillors are only paid at 25p per mile.

Bus travel is paid at the cost of the ordinary fare, cheap fare or portion of any weekly ticket.
The rates for allowances and expenses are considered by an independent remuneration panel, as stipulated by the Local Government Act 2000.
