How far to swim?

Arthur Hill Memorial Baths and Reading’s Central Pool may be replaced within the next five years by modern facilities. The policy committee of Reading Borough Council considered a review of leisure facilities and future provision at their meeting on 30 November 2015 and Katesgrove swimmers may have further to travel in the future.

Reading’s Central Pool has remained in use since plans for a new pool linked to the Chatham Street development proved undeliverable. The Central Pool will  be closed from 7 – 21 December as it requires urgent repairs.

The report considered that the estimated £5 million cost of a full refurbishment of the Central Pool poor value for money and proposed instead that a temporary, demountable pool should be erected at Rivermead within the next two years. There would then be further work on delivering a replacement competition standard pool.

Distance from Whitley Pump:
Central Pool is about 1.5 miles away and Rivermead is 2 miles away.

It was proposed that Arthur Hill Memorial Baths be replaced :

The building is expensive to run and requires significant investment over the next few years if it is to remain operational, and has a limited lifespan.

It is the oldest sporting facility in Reading and marked its centenary  in 2011. Arthur Hill was mayor of Reading  from 1883 to 1887 and the pool was built on land donated by his son-in-law, Dr Jamieson Hurry. Arthur Hill Memorial Baths may be small but it has an Olympic sized legend!

The proposed replacement for this pool was :

a new neighbourhood 25m 6 lane pool at Palmer Park linked to the existing leisure facilities.

Distance from Whitley Pump:
Arthur Hill Memorial Baths are about 1.3 miles away and Palmer Park Sports Stadium is about 1.7 miles away.

During the meeting, which took more than three hours, councillors spent twenty minutes considering the review and proposals presented. It is worth watching the webcast to see how a discussion about swimming pools can get extremely party political.

Both the Central Pool and Arthur Hill Memorial Baths are managed by Reading Borough Council. In south Reading there is another pool at Academy Sport on Northumberland Avenue.

Distance from Whitley Pump:
Academy Sport is about 1.5 miles away.
