Heritage Open Days 2015

Katesgrove’s Heritage Open Days take place from 11-13 September this year.  Times for the events should be checked, and some require advance booking.


Friday 11 September – Sunday 13 September

Forbury Gardens
The Trooper Potts VC Memorial trust will be outside Forbury Gardens, opposite the Crown Court, to explain about the new memorial dedicated to Reading’s only Victoria Cross holder who was born in Katesgrove and attended Katesgrove school.


Saturday 12 September

IllustrateWatlington Housed talk about Reading’s new sculpture & memorial to Reading’s VC & The Berkshire Yeomanry
Watlington House, Watlington Street
An illustrated  talk will be given about Gallipoli, Trooper Potts and the memorial to him to be unveiled this October near the Forbury Gardens.

Rising Sun Arts Centre, Silver Street
This building was founded as a temperance house in an area of Reading notorious at the time for its squalor and the number of beer houses and pubs. It was built by Alfred Waterhouse, the architect of parts of Reading Museum and the old Town Hall as well as the Natural History Museum.

Fans of photographs of Reading will be interested in the latest book by local photographer Terry Allsop, ‘Caught on Camera: Reading in the 1970s’. There is a public signing of the book from 11.00 – 12.00.

Afternoon tours will be held of the always inspiring and mostly edible RISC roof garden.


St Giles-In-Reading

St Giles-in-Reading open day
St Giles-in-Reading , Southampton Street
This much restored church and local landmark, founded in the twelfth century  will be open to view.

Afternoon tours at 13.00 of the Burial Ground and Quaker Meeting House on Church Street (between Southampton Street and London Street).
